Book Signing at Comic Con

I signed copies of The Changing Vampire of Film and Television at the McFarland booth on Friday, July 25 at the ComicCon. This was my first official signing and it was great. Not only did I sell and sign several copies, but I met the "Dragon Lord" who was traveling from a distant galaxy to pitch his "life story" to the Pam, the lady at the McFarland booth. I'll most likely be back next year, so look for me in the Independent Publisher area.

Scary Review of Changing Vampire

Scary Monsters Magazine (issue 65) gave The Changing Vampire of Film and Television rave reviews.

"Every single film is put under a microscope and analyzed. After going through the book twice, I can't think of a single omission. McFarland has a long history of publishing books that brilliantly document the history of our beloved SCARY movie genre. THE CHANGING VAMPIRE OF FILM AND TELEVISION is one of their best."

They really understood what I was after with the book.Read the whole review.

Award Winning Horror Shorts

The short story
Moth and Rust has just won first place in the 14th Annual Garden State Horror Writers Short Story Contest. This story has a long history. It originally began as a novel about zombies in a new housing development and was titled Creeping Rot (I've since recycled the name). This never panned out, but the story, of a somewhat zombie-ish old man and his grandson pretty much wrote itself. It was submitted to both Weird Magazine and Cemetery Dance. Both obviously passed, but I knew the story had potential as both editors sent personal notes saying how close the story had made to the final cut. As a whim, I scoured the web for writing contests, and submitted to two (The other was the Bards and Sages, below). I believe that the Garden State Horror Writers won't publish this piece. They only offer the Graversen Award and the prize money. If this is the case, I'll be sure to get this in print somewhere. After all, it is an award winner.

Zombie Maker won 3rd place in the Bards and Sages annual horror fiction contest. The contest entailed writing a "classic" monster story – you know, vampires, werewolves, monsters from sewn together body parts. I chose Zombie Maker because it was about traditional Caribbean voodoo.Head to the site to check the details and read the excerpt. Also, the story will appear in the upcoming 2008 Bards and Sages Anthology.

Etymology of Vampire and Zombie

My article "The Un-History of the Undead" has been published by Verbatim. This is a language quarterly, but it suits the article, as it traces the history of the two words through early myth and then up through film
.

Imagine that a vampire knocked on your door—a real, true to life (or death) vampire. You open the door and find a ruddy-faced overweight man with long fingernails, his mouth and left eye open, and dressed in a linen shroud. Not what you expected? Did you expect to find a well-groomed man, tall with pale skin, fangs, and a cape slung around his shoulders?

10 Random Facts

As a way to promote the Bards and Sages horror contest, I was asked to give 10 random facts about myself. I leaned toward the horror theme. Check out the whole list at editor Julie Ann Dawson's article.
